The entire time we were then (late May) there were just hundreds of tourists (obviously myself included). It's just unknown outside of Europe. There will be lots of Europeans. Highly worth it though. For something quiet, you can try to get to Amorgos, lovely island in the Cyclades (same island region as Santorini). Check ferry options on Rome2Rio or Ferryhopper. There's a short ferry from Santorini to Amorgos when I tried booking in Ferryhopper. And once you are there you will realize ALL the Cyclades islands have whitewashed buildings, cliffs, and spectacular water views. While Naxos handles the beaches, Mykonos is better beach-wise than Santorini. In my experience Santorini is WAY more touristy than Mykonos even though Mykonos IS touristy. Santorini IS the view, and that's what sells it. Santorini will be virtually empty in April..you'll have the locals fighting each other to get your business. Most mid-range places are located in Fira. Avoid Perissa Beach locations. The water will be too cold to swim, the beach is rocky, and you'll be located at the far end of the island for the major tourist destinations.
